Christian Buzzword Bingo, redux
Back in 2008 I wrote a "Christian buzzword bingo" generator based on an idea of a pastor friend. Now as part of a revamping of my personal web site to be more modern and "mobile friendly" (still a work in progress), I have updated the vocabulary list, including a bunch of new terms I've learned since starting to attend MSR. It's all in good fun, although there's also a purpose, as I commented in a follow-up post:
I think as time goes on I am more and more leaning toward trying to use less and less code words. I just don't think they're necessary. For example, Jesus was able to talk about "salvation" without ever mentioning "soteriology". So I am not so sure the concepts in the Bible need 2000 years of theology to explain them - otherwise the people to whom they were originally spoken/written wouldn't have gotten them, either, eh? If one can't preach Christ crucified and have someone understand without resorting to theological language, then the messenger is wrong, not the Message. At least that's how I see it.You can play my buzzword bingo game here.

Wow. The list has gotten quite long, hasn't it? :-)
CH,
Indeed. And I just had a friend promise a slew of further phrases.
I have a fairly good vocabulary and yet a lot of these I've never heard of. Guess that speaks well for my pastor avoiding buzzwords, heh. If I didn't know better, I'd think you were making up a few like "Christological".
Sometimes there aren't other words for it, or the words -are- the old words. For example, I don't know what else we would call a tithe.
Matt,
I've made none of them up. A lot are certainly "professional" theological terms, but that's part of my issue with them, I guess. Many of them have come from textbooks I've been reading (the latest being this). OTOH, a lot of them are from "mainstream" Christ-speak, and yet I think they throw up barriers when talking to non-believers.
For ex., "tithe." You don't know what else we'd call it. What would an atheist friend call it? How 'bout "charitable giving?" Not exact, obviously, but it is a starting point for dialog. I myself didn't really figure out what the hell a "tithe" was until I was well into adulthood.
Thanks for the comment!
Ha ha ha!!! Funny, I actually came across about four of them earlier today just SKIMMING through a book review! And Christological was one of them. Just discovered your blog and was going to read silently but this made me smile and I had to comment. :))
Pearl Girl,
Thanks for stopping by! Glad the post made you laugh.
