New toy
The above shows my newest work toy, a HP Mini with a 10" screen sitting on top of one of my boss's two Sony Vaios (13" screen) which I had been borrowing to use as a more portable laptop, sitting on top of one of my two Dell Inspirons (17" screen) that are my primary workstations but are too big and heavy to want to lug around with me everywhere I go. Interestingly enough, the Mini's keyboard is only ¼" smaller than the Vaio's, which was quite livable. Unfortunately, both the Mini and the Vaio remap Page Up, Page Down, Home and End to function key combinations using the cursor keys, which this keyboard-only guy loathes. But I'll deal.
I plan on taking the Mini with me everywhere I go at work. No more notebooks!

What does your mini run?
You'll have to let me know your impressions of it as time goes by. We've been thinking maybe this will be the perfect kind of thing for a high school student...not as an "everything" computer, but perfect for school. For a kid who constantly is forgetting assignments and classically disorganized (he's NEVER brought a non-wrinkled paper home because he just shoves everything in his binder), but is also in all the most advanced classes...he's gonna need all the help he can get.
Erin,
This is the one with Windows XP Home Edition. You can also get it with Linux, I believe.
Stats for this one are:
o 1.6GHz Atom processor (pretty much the standard for netbooks)
o 1GB RAM
o 160GB HDD (you can also get it with a 80GB SSD which extends the battery life about an hour)
o $449
I am actually thinking of getting cheaper netbooks for the kids to replace their ANCIENT machines. My problem is I wouldn't WANT them to take them mobile yet, so I'd have to get cable locks for them. :o)
So you didn't get the SSD...I've been wondering about the performance, ever used one?
Don't you mean 8GB SSD?
That's a pretty nice tool for the price, I'm definitely going to consider one for my son in the next year or so.
It's cute! And probably not slow, either.
Very cool!
We've come to the realization that we need to get the kids a desktop, because they are wanting to use ours more and more. Too many people to use just two computers. (well, technically, just one computer, since Jeremy won't let anyone else use his)
Cool! I have a 17" Inspirion for my home. I love it.
Have fun with your new little toy :)
Jim,
Cool. Reminds me of some of the computers I've built and this song...
My momma was a Gibson,
Daddy was a Fender,
That's why they call me...
Mindbender...
Erin,
You'd think the SSD would be 8GB, and maybe it is, although the spec page for the box says 80GB. A coworker got one retail with an 8GB SSD. It does what he needs. I haven't heard any complaints about the speed, and of course, it has a longer battery life (I personally would've preferred the SSD myself for that reason).
Les,
It is cute. And fast enough for what it's for.
Meghann,
Yeah, a low end netbook hooked to an LCD monitor and USB keyboard and mouse could be just the thing. Although you don't want it to be TOO mobile or it will disappear. I've thought about getting them for the kids and putting cable locks on them to keep them on their desks. :o)
Barbara,
Yeah, the Inspirons are great, but they sure are a lot to lug around. Reminds me of the old "sewing machine" so-called portable Compaqs from way back in the day.
Sam,
We'll see how it plays out.
