It's a bit brisk out

Two days ago it was 52°. Now it's 6°. This winter's already been like a rollercoaster, and it is just getting started. But unlike many family and friends we have avoided any major "weather events" and their associated fun, like power outages and road closures and toppled trees. Today's cold snap just means the furnace is going to run non-stop today. Although I dreamed about the sun room roof leaking last night, which I hope isn't a harbinger of what's in store over the next few months.

If you're reading this somewhere where it's snowing and blowing and nasty out, good - that means you still have electricity! As I've been telling my snow-and-ice-bound blogging friends in Portland and Ft. Wayne and elsewhere - "Stay safe. Stay warm. Stay electrified."

[And Cindy, you can just go pound sand. :o) ]

Yes I'm still electrified and modemized! Let's hope it stays that way. You stay warm too!

I do have to say in the big picture it seems your weather is freakier than ours. At least we're consistent!

Erin,

Everywhere I have ever lived people have used the old yarn, "If you don't like the weather in x wait five minutes, it'll change." But for the value x = Missouri it does seem to hold more often than not.

Anyway, good to know you're still online, because those electrons flowing from your computer through the pipes of the Internet means there are other electrons flowing to your furnace. May they continue to do so! I am still waiting to hear back a response to an email ping I sent to my cousin Mark, who is also a Portlander. Looking at Google Maps he lives in the area bounded by SE Woodstock Blvd, SE 52nd Ave, SE Johnson Creek Blvd and SE McLoughlin Blvd, if you know where that is (I am guessing it's somewhere in the southeast part of the city :o).

I didn't know you had family here, yeah, I know right where that is. We're about 8-10 miles NE of that. I haven't heard there are any significant power outages around here yet...well hang on...they just said on the news there is an outage in Milwaukie...which would be around there, so maybe he is out.

They say around here "If you want to know the weather look out the window". This is because forecasting accurately in the PacNW is difficult, so it's generally only spot on in the dry summer months.

it is 7:30 on monday morning and the outside thermometer reads 22. is that any better? and i'd be happy to eat sand if it was from some Caribbean island, thank you.

Cindy,

You are forgiven. :o)

It was 3 degrees outside at our house this morning. The furnace has run non-stop for about 36 hours now, and the house is at about 66 degrees.

one down side of having so much warmth in winter is that one occasionally forgets to switch a heat pump from "off" to "heat". when i went to bed around midnight the thermostat read about 65, which is about right for evening. but when i came down this morning, with every step the air got colder and colder- i was thinking oh no not at christmas... but it was just absent mindedness rather than a major malfunction. whew. relieved but chilly for a while.

Erin,

My cousin sez they've had power and are fine.

Cindy,

Our heat pump has been going non-stop for two days and can't get the house above 66-67 degrees. And in a house of cold-blooded people (I'm not, but my wife and especially kids are) that means all energy efficiency a heat pump brings is lost by the big space heater running in the play room all the time.

our heat pump has never been heavily taxed on heating, but in the worst of summer there are always some days it just won't get cooler than 75. there's no apparent cost benefit then either. the only time that bothers me is when i'm exercising. (my husband and daughter are another story entirely) they're quite happy when the house is 65. my daughter right now is wearing a tank with spaghetti straps. i'm in sweats with a t-shirt under and i'm still cold.

it never gets boring! i think that's why god puts all of us in families with diametrically opposed temperaments. it keeps him entertained :-)
