Four and a half weeks
The kids only have four and a half more weeks before school starts up again. It seems like this summer is flying by, even as we do a whole bunch of nothing. I have to admit I think the kids now days are getting cheated. When I was in school we were out basically from Memorial Day to Labor Day. No more. The school year is forever encroaching more and more on the calendar. And that's too bad - they grow up fast, and they still need some time to "just be kids". But at least our youngest three don't have to go through the ill-fated and stupid "year-around school" that my oldest two did.
I will be taking a week off the second week in August just to be with Les (while she is also on break from school - her summer classes end next week) and the kids. We won't be going anywhere. It will be a "staycation" (thank gas prices for much of that). But it will be good to all be off at the same time. It's something that actually happens pretty rarely. I might even do something out of character and take everyone to do something fun.
How's your summer going? Too fast? Or are you ready, oh, dear God, ready to have the kids back in school already? :o)

i'm not ready! public school here starts aug 11. not sure when we'll start, but usually about the same time. we haven't gone anywhere as a family since keith has been working out of town during the weeks. i'm just not ready to call it a summer yet!
We've only just started our summer break. Kids here school between September and mid July so summer vacation is only five and a half weeks long! As we home ed we take a little longer off (8 weeks!). However, summer doesn't really seem to be happening much here so far. It's been raining a lot this summer and temps are below normal (second year in a row now). I'm kind of hoping we'll get an unexpected heat wave in August!
Cindy,
August 11 is WAYYYYY too early!
Lyn,
Five and a half weeks is a ripoff! The kids across the UK should arise in revolt.
I'm with you, Jim. I loved the super-long summers that we had. Best memories of my childhood. They seemed to last forever, and by the time school started again, you were actually ready to go back to school. I hate that we're cheating the kids out of that experience.

There needs to be time to figure out how to deal with boredom and ennui - valuable life skills!
That said, Jon made the tactical error the other day of actually voicing out loud, "I'm bored" in my presence. He then got to do some chores to alleviate his boredom! :o)
