And so it goes

I went to volunteer at the Samaritan Center tonight - first Thursday they've been open in three weeks. It was cold but not the bitter cold it's been the past few days so carrying food out to the cars was welcome exercise. Ended up being pretty busy and staying late, but it was good to be back in the easy going camaraderie of the volunteers all joking with each other. And so the new year begins like the old ends, the poor still with us and we duty bound to try to help them. It can get pretty comfortable just showing up and doing "the volunteer thing". Feeling like "I am doing my part." Except I am not, not even close.

I wonder what 2008 holds in store for God getting me more involved? Dunno. Kinda scary. Stay tuned.

Ah Jim. Amazing how you get all me excited and interested in helping out like that than put me back where I am in feeling like I am not even close to "doing my part".

So how'd you get involved in the Samaritan Center? I've asked a bit about orgs around my area, and they're never really that clear about how I could help in some way. Except when I mention technical stuff, than they get all excited about helping with that stuff :)

Chris,

It's hard to live in Jeff City and not know about the Sam Center, actually. For the size of community they have a high visibility in terms of community support, etc. I then just fretted over whether I should actually go volunteer for something like six months, which was time all wasted, and then went and talked with them and a week or so later was helping carrying food every week.

A lot of charitable orgs have limited volunteering opportunities for people who work M-F, 8:00-5:00. The thing I like about the Sam Center is they do one distribution from 4:00-6:00 p.m. on Thursdays, and that allows me to volunteer. I liked the mobile food pantry experiement, too, because it was on Saturdays.

Keep trying, you'll find something!
